Ashley Gordon, Media Specialist of the Year

Ashley Gordon from Quail Run Elementary School Named District Media Specialist of the Year

Mrs. Ashley Gordon has been named the Houston County School District’s Media Specialist of the Year. Mrs. Gordon is a media specialist at Quail Run Elementary School in Warner Robins. She will advance to represent the Houston County School District at the regional level.

Mrs. Gordon has served as the media specialist at Quail Run for the past five years. Mrs. Gordon graduated from Berry College with a degree in English Literature and has a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University.

“I’m humbled and honored to be selected for this award,” said Mrs. Gordon. “Houston County media specialists are doing amazing work all over the county, and it’s a privilege to simply work alongside them! All means all in our media centers too; we are a collaborative bunch!”

All 5 Houston County High School Named 2024 Advanced Placement Honor Schools

2024 AP Honor Schools Named

All five high schools in Houston County have been named 2024 Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools by State Superintendent Richard Woods. Based on the results from the 2023 AP courses and exams, our high schools placed in six of the eight categories.

  • AP Access and Support Schools – Houston County High and Warner Robins High
  • AP Humanities – Houston County High
  • AP Humanities Achievement Schools – Houston County High
  • AP Schools of Distinction – Houston County High and Veterans High
  • AP STEM Schools – Houston County High, Northside High, Perry High, Veterans High and Warner Robins High
  • AP STEM Achievement Schools – Houston County High, Perry High and Veterans High

Congratulations 2024 Elementary Oratorical Contest Winners

Lake Joy Elementary School Student Wins Elementary Oratorical Contest

Langston Road Elementary and Matt Arthur Elementary Students Place Second and Third

Eighteen fifth graders from the Houston County School District’s Gifted and Talented Education classes recently competed in the Elementary School Oratorical Contest at the Central Office in Perry. During their speeches, students were asked to discuss which historical event required people to be the most optimistic and how their optimism impacts our lives today.

The 2024 top orators were:

  • 1st place – Kahlil Florence, Lake Joy Elementary, Coach Jennifer Yakush;
  • 2nd place – Riley May Gramley, Langston Road Elementary, Coach Hayley Sikes; and
  • 3rd place – Thomas Wadsworth, Matt Arthur Elementary, Coach Peaches Tankersley.

Bonaire Middle School New Principal Rebecca Oakley

Rebecca Oakley Named Principal of Bonaire Middle School

Mrs. Rebecca Oakley was named the principal of Bonaire Middle School during the Houston County Board of Education meeting held March 12, 2024. Oakley currently serves as the principal of Centerville Elementary School.

“I am so blessed and excited to serve the Bonaire community as principal of Bonaire Middle School,” said Oakley. “I would like to thank Dr. Scott, the Board of Education, and our Executive Cabinet for this opportunity. I look forward to working closely with the students, staff, and families to continue the tradition of excellence in academics and character. Go Jags!”

Prior to joining Centerville Elementary School, Oakley served as the Assistant Principal for Instruction at Northside Elementary School. She also served as a teacher at Feagin Mill Middle School, Warner Robins Middle School, and Mossy Creek Middle School. In 2011, she was named the Warner Robins Middle School Teacher of the Year and the Houston County Teacher of the Year. She was also named as the 2015 STEM Teacher of the Year by the Air Force Association.

2024-2025 Pre-K Registration March 4-29

Houston County School District to Hold Pre-K Registration March 4 – 29

The Houston County School District will accept applications for the 2024-2025 PreKindergarten (Pre-K) program between March 4 – 29. Approximately 1,300 children are expected to register for Pre-K in Houston County.

Pre-K students must be four years of age on September 1, 2024, and reside within the Houston County School District. Children who will be five years old on September 1, 2024, and are not currently enrolled in one of the District’s Pre-K classrooms should register as kindergarten students for the 2024-2025 school year.

The Pre-K application portal can be found on the District’s Central Registration webpage. To apply, parents should:

1. Go online to schedule an appointment. The first week of appointments will open on February 23. Once those are full, additional appointments will open as needed.

2. Fill out the pre-registration paperwork on the District’s Central Registration webpage.

3. Bring the proper documents to Central Registration on the day of your appointment.
