2010 CRCT Scores - Houston Outperforms State In All Areas

HOUSTON COUNTY, GA – Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) system scores were released yesterday, June 23, 2010, by the Georgia Department of Education for the state assessment given April 2010.  Houston County students scored higher than the state average in every subject for every grade.

“I am extremely proud and excited about our CRCT scores,” commented Superintendent Dr. Robin Hines.  “Once again our system scored higher than the state in every grade for all content areas!  The gap is considerable in most areas, with our students performing as much as 13 points above their peers across Georgia. These scores validate the hard work of our teachers, administrators, support staff, students and parents.  I couldn’t be more pleased.  Houston County is fortunate to have the best teachers anywhere!”

For 11 years, Georgia has used the CRCT to measure the knowledge and skills students master by the end of the school year.  Based on standards set by Georgia, student scores are categorized as either: does not meet standard, meets standard or exceeds standard.  Students in grades 1–8 are tested in the areas of reading, mathematics and English/language arts; students in grades 3–8 are also tested in social studies and science.

The CRCT scores are used to provide educators with student achievement data to drive decision-making at the classroom, school, local and state level, and to serve as gateway assessments for certain grades, meaning students must pass certain portions of the test to be promoted to the next grade.  CRCT scores are also used as gateway assessments for third, fifth and eighth grade.  Eighth-graders must pass the reading and math for promotion to ninth grade.  Third-graders must pass reading for promotion to the fourth grade, and fifth-graders must pass reading and math for promotion to the sixth grade.

The percentage of students who scored in the “meets or exceeds standards” categories on the 2010 and 2009 CRCT are provided.  In addition, a comparison of the 2010 CRCT scores for Houston County and Georgia are provided.
