Substitute Requirements/Applicant Information

Application

Submit your online application to the job posting when it opens.

Please read over the requirements, and ensure that ALL documents are uploaded, or your application may not meet the initial requirements. If you are not a certified teacher (or retired), you can take a substitute course (see information below). But all certification requirements must be met BEFORE you can be hired.
(For the substitute training options, please scroll down to the last section of the Requirements section.)

During the hiring season, applications are continuously reviewed, and you will be notified via the email account associated with your online application regarding any further action you may need to take, and each email will explain the next step. This is a multi-step process, and one that has evolved over the last couple of years. Therefore, your experience may be different from those current substitutes that were hired in previous years.

  1. Your application will be reviewed for completeness, which includes uploaded documents and references. (If there are not at least three completed professional references, your application will NOT be reviewed at all.)
  2. If all initial requirements are met on the application and you have completed your training, the onboarding process can begin, which involves new hire paperwork (sent electronically through TalentEd) and scheduling your fingerprint appointment.
  3. Once all new hire paperwork and fingerprint requirements have been fulfilled, you will be scheduled for the next available orientation session (notified via email). THIS ORIENTATION IS DIFFERENT FROM TRAINING - THEY ARE TWO SEPARATE EVENTS.
  4. Once you have completed the above steps, you will receive information regarding instructions for setting up and accessing your Frontline account.
All supporting documents must be attached to your online application, otherwise it WILL NOT move forward through the review process. You should have the ability to return to your application and submit any additional documentation that you deem necessary.

HCBE requires a minimum of 3 professional/business (not personal) references, e.g., supervisors, managers, co-workers. You can also use volunteer leaders, pastors, mentors, or teachers if your work experience is limited. Please refrain from using family members as references.

To determine if references have been completed, you may click on the references tab within your application to view the status. Reference surveys must be updated if they are more than two years old.

Requirements

To become a substitute teacher in our system, our initial educational requirement is that all applicants must have at the very least a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Pay rates are increased for some levels of education.

  • High school diploma or GED required. Associate's degree preferred ($12.00/hour)
THIS IS THE BASELINE REQUIREMENT; IF YOU ARE SEEKING HIGHER LEVELS OF PAY, YOU MUST PROVIDE SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS IN YOUR APPLICATION FOR THOSE LEVELS.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher ($14.00/hour)
  • Certified teacher/retired teacher ($20.00/hour)

Certification requirements are to either be a certified teacher or have substitute teacher certification. If you are a certified teacher (either through the Georgia PSC or an out-of-state teaching certificate), THESE DOCUMENTS MUST BE UPLOADED TO YOUR APPLICATION IN ORDER TO MOVE FORWARD.

If you are not a certified teacher, please look below for the training options available to you. Please note that if you must take a substitute training course, the certificate received through either of these methods is not considered a teaching certificate - therefore this certificate does NOT raise you to the "certified teacher" pay rate.

Acceptable supporting documents for certification requirements are one of the following:

  1. Official teacher's certificate
  2. Certificate of eligibility
  3. RESA substitute teacher certificate OR Stedi.org certificate

Acceptable supporting documents for educational requirements:

  1. Transcripts - these can be official OR unofficial. They must show the applicant's name, the institution's name, and the degree awarded date.

NOTE: If you are a certified teacher, transcripts are not necessary. The uploaded teacher certificate will be the only necessary document.

If you are a Georgia TRS retiree, we must request TRS approval first before you can return to work as a substitute teacher.  Please ensure that you indicate your TRS status during the application process.

If you are not a certified teacher (or retired teacher), you must participate in a substitute training course.

YOU ONLY NEED TO COMPLETE ONE OF THESE TRAINING COURSES!

In our area, the Middle Georgia RESA organization provides a Substitute Workshop class. This class meets in-person and lasts approximately 4 hours. At this time, Middle Georgia RESA does NOT require a test. (We also accept certificates from other RESA agencies within the state of Georgia.)
Please visit their website at Middle Georgia RESA.

If you have taken this course in the past, and still possess your certificate, please upload the document to your application. We are not affiliated with this organization, therefore we will not have any record of your attendance at any of their courses. You can contact their office, and they may be able to provide you with some sort of transcript or proof of your attendance.

In addition to this option, we also accept a certificate from the Stedi.org online course, which DOES require a test.
NOTE: YOU MUST SCORE AT LEAST 85% ON THE TEST, OR IT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
If you choose this option, you will need to take the SubSkills Option A course.

Please visit their website at Stedi.org

The certificate received through either of these methods is not considered a teaching certificate - therefore this certificate does NOT raise you to the "certified teacher" pay rate.
